For more than three decades, Warren Steptoe has been one of Australia's most prolific and highly regarded fishing and outdoor scribes. Sadly, he retired in 2015. The man's had a tremendous influence on my own fishing, photography and writing journey over the last 25 years, so it was impossible to let his retirement pass without shining the spotlight on his career and the enormous contribution he made to recreational fishing and boating in Australia. You can download this special retrospective feature, which ran in the March/April 2017 issue of FishLife magazine, by clicking on the cover image below (it takes a moment to load).
Jewfish on Lures: Lessons Learnt
The last couple of years have been a happy blur of fishing, photography and writing... but mostly fishing. And the bulk of that angling time has been spent pursuing jewfish or mulloway on lures off the rocks in northern NSW. Sure, it can be hard-going at times, but the rewards are certainly there for those with the time and inclination.
Sadly, this post also coincides with the last-ever print edition of FishLife magazine. The demise of premium print publications in Australia, particularly in niche industries like fishing, is a growing trend and a reflection of the increasing challenges faced by publishers. Even the major operators are feeling the pinch of falling magazine sales and reduced spending from advertisers. It’s an unfortunate commercial reality, and such a shame. I’ll certainly miss my quarterly hit of hard copy FishLife goodness. And yes, that is a tailor on the cover of the final issue... Vivé le chopper.
Trout and About in Tassie
Earlier in the year, I headed south for a Tassie adventure with my good mate and fellow FishLife magazine contributor, Chris Baty, who also runs the Compleat Angler stores in Melbourne's CBD and Geelong. For something a little different, we arranged a motorhome through the good folk at Camplify, an exciting Aussie business that provides a clever 'Airbnb' style service based around motorhomes, caravans and camper trailers. It's a great concept that's perfect for travelling anglers and holidaymakers alike. As you'd expect, we had an absolute blast exploring and fishing Tassie's east coast! To top it off, that trip yielded another FishLife cover shot and a fun feature, which you'll find in Issue 31 (July/August 2017).
New Horizons
New Zealand. The place is incredible. Everyone who's been there knows that. And yet, until recently, I'd never been there myself. In the end, all it took was a gentle nudge from my mate, Ian 'Wader Man' Ruscoe, who hatched a plan to hire a campervan, fill it with fishin' gear and explore the South Island. What a choice idea, bro! And thanks to Wader Man's precise project-planning, the trip came together like a dream. Even the fish played ball... most of the time!
On the Rise — FishLife magazine
Well, 2017 seems to be in a hurry, doesn't it? It feels like the year's only just begun, and yet here we are at the end of summer already. As always, I'm a bit slow off the mark with this post about the latest issue of FishLife magazine (Jan/Feb 2017). While the print edition is off the stands, it's available free online until the end of March.
The J-Files
Since returning to my old stomping grounds on the NSW north coast earlier in the year, I've been spending way too much time chasing mulloway or jewfish on lures off the rocks... and shooting a pile of pictures along the way! It's been a fun ride, and one that I'm excited to share in the Nov/Dec 2016 issue of FishLife magazine, which is available free online until the end of January 2017.
Wandering the Whitsundays
I've had some memorable angling adventures recently, including an enjoyable jaunt in the spectacular Whitsunday Islands, in north Queensland. The full story is in the Sept/Oct 2016 issue of FishLife magazine.
Tailor Made — FishLife Magazine
The June/July 2016 issue of FishLife magazine is out and about.
Knee Deep - FishLife Magazine
Here's a quick sample of the spreads from my 'Knee Deep' feature in the May/June 2016 issue of FishLife magazine.
NSW north coast
The good ol' U.S. of A
I was stoked to pick up a double-page spread in the February 2016 issue of American monthly, Sport Fishing Magazine. The pic is the opener for John Cahill's excellent feature on training for big fish encounters. You can almost hear the creaking and groaning of rod guides as Rudy Boué-Mandil digs his toes into the deck!
FishLife Cover pic
This is a bit of a belated post, but I was lucky enough to snag the cover of the Nov/Dec 2015 issue of FishLife magazine with an underwater snap from my regular travels to northern NSW. The FishLife crew gave my pics and feature a very generous spread — thanks, fellas!
Back Blocks Bass
The Sept/October 2015 issue of FishLife is on the stands.
Autumn Blues
Some more FishLife goodness — this time in the May/June 2015 issue. Matt Young shot the cracking cover pic.
Eyes on the Prize
The March/April 2015 issue of FishLife magazine has hit the streets and, as always, it looks a million dollars. Below are a few pics of the spreads from my "Eyes on the Prize" feature, and another awesome underwater cover pic by David Granville Photography.

I swore I'd limit this blog to my wedding, portrait and music work, but what the heck!
Doubling back to 2012 and it was a do-it-yourself Cape York piece for issue #2 of FishLife magazine. Weipa was the destination, and it was all about re-living a couple of month-long trips I enjoyed in the red dust waaaaaaaay back in 1995 and 1999.
